Overview
This is one of the trails you will not find on Google Maps, and it is only open from August to May. Here you will find a unique landscape, interesting plants and likely encounter beavers (definitely see their huts in the middle of the lake)
The Carp Barrens Trail lies on one of the most ecologically significant areas in the region. Outcrops of exposed one billion year old Canadian Shield bedrock are folded into glacial-scraped ridges and troughs of provincially significant wetlands and ponds.
Getting There
The trail is located near Carp, approximately 30 minutes from downtown Ottawa, or 10-15 minutes away from Kanata. Parking is very limited on the narrow shoulder of Thomas A. Dolan Parkway. Approximately 12 parking spots total are available at the two trailheads. Also, parking can be tight after heavy snowfall in winter.
The Trail
The Carp Barrens Trail is for pedestrian and mountain bike use only. Dogs are not permitted. The trail is relatively easy, with some bigger rocks along the way. Not a stroller-friendly walk, and watch your small kids as there are few spots where you can fall from the rocks.
It is also quite challenging for mountain bikers, don't go here if you're a newbie or not sure in your gear.

The ground is covered with weird-looking sphagnum of all sorts.

There are two big beaver huts along the trail. If you walk quietly, you might actually encounter beavers sometimes, even during the winter.

You'll definitely take some great photos any time of the year:

Summary
Overall, it is a great trail I'd recommend anyone looking for something unlike any other trail in the area. It will never be crowded, even during the weekends.
Given the parking situation - it works best if you live nearby or have a backup plan (for that I'd suggest a 'Crazy Horse Trail' which is 5 minutes away and is very similar).
