Overview

When it comes to skating - Ottawa has a lot to offer. There are lots of arenas offering public skating (though, only specific days/hours) as well as community rinks (operate when it is consistently cold outside), but outdoor refrigerated rinks are free and literally open any time (daytime) any day throughout entire winter season, even when it is +10C outside.

Rink of Dreams

Rink of Dreams

The Rink of Dreams is a 12,500-square-foot outdoor refrigerated ice rink that operates annually from December through to the end of March. It is located in Downtown, next to the city hall and open daily 9am to 11pm. There is a big undergroung parking nearby (City Hall Underground Parking Lot) which is affordable ($2 max) after 6pm on weekdays and any time during the weekends, as well as plenty (outside of business hours) of parking along the city hall and on the side streets.

There is music and lights in the evening, but this is also usually a quite busy time, even after 9pm. Mornings are less crowded.

Ben Franklin Skating Rink

Ben Franklin Skating Rink

Also referred as 'Centerpointe Skating Rink' is a great place to skate with the family. It is refrigerated and ice is kept in great condition (weather permitting), lights are on for night time skating. Parking is free (outside of business hours), and is located along the street. The rink has the possibility to get crowded quickly, as it is a bit smaller than other rinks and many skaters live nearby.

Skating Rink at Lansdowne Park

Skating Rink at Lansdowne Park

This rink has a great location, even though parking can be tricky (paid hourly parking lots close by, or free on-street parking, but expect a 10 minute walk). You can enjoy ice skating here from 7am to 11pm daily. There is a lot of amenities, great selection of restaurants nearby, as well as cinema and other entertainment. Overall it is a great place to spend your evening. The rink might be adorned with holiday decorations during the winter season, creating a charming and enjoyable atmosphere.

Summary

Ottawa stands out as a winter wonderland for skating enthusiasts, offering a diverse range of options for both indoor and outdoor experiences. If Rideau Canal skateway is closed - refrigerated rinks are a great alternative (and also have much better ice surface).

  • If you're looking for casual family skating - choose Ben Franklin Skating Rink or morning time at Rink of Dreams.
  • If you're looking for festive atmosphere - Lansdowne Park Skating Rink is the right choice.

But all of these rinks are worth a visit, so try them all and pick your favorite one!
